The two-day conference attracted a variety of attendees including researchers, teachers, retirees, students, veterinarians, industry representatives, medical professionals, and members of the general public. The Saturday program brought in many who were particularly interested in equine, dog, cat, or human osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu\/academics\/clinsci\/equine-orthopaedic-research-center\/Pages\/c-wayne-mcilwraith.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wayne McIlwraith<\/a>, renowned osteoarthritis researcher and equine orthopedic surgeon from <a href=\"http:\/\/csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado State University<\/a> participated as the keynote speaker for the event, which is named in memory of the faculty member who mentored him during his PhD studies at Purdue. Dr. McIlwraith obtained his veterinary degree from Massey University in New Zealand before coming to Purdue, where he completed a large animal surgery residency and then earned his PhD, working with Dr. Van Sickle, who was a long-time Purdue Veterinary Medicine professor of veterinary anatomy. Dr. McIlwraith spoke on several topics at the conference, including cartilage defect repair, the future of osteoarthritis research, and regenerative medicine and how it relates to osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2818\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2818\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2818 img-responsive img-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0079_Breur_Claire_Kilmer_sm-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Gert Breur pictured with Claire Kilmer\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0079_Breur_Claire_Kilmer_sm-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0079_Breur_Claire_Kilmer_sm-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0079_Breur_Claire_Kilmer_sm-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0079_Breur_Claire_Kilmer_sm-355x235.jpg 355w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0079_Breur_Claire_Kilmer_sm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Gert Breur, who led the effort to coordinate the conference, pauses for a photo op with one of the other speakers from Purdue, Claire Kilmer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other conference sessions were led by PVM faculty members, including Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/directory\/person.php?id=8\">Gert Breur<\/a>, professor of small animal surgery and director of the Center for Comparative Translational Research; <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/bms\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Basic Medical Sciences<\/a> Department faculty members Russell Main, Marxa Figueiredo, and Dianne Little; and Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members Stephanie Thomovsky, Sarah Malek, Chee Kin Lim, and Tim Lescun. \u00a0The Saturday session that was open to the public featured talks about how to manage the different stages of osteoarthritis in people, horses, and pets, and included presentations by Lafayette Orthopedic Surgeon Robert J. Hagen, M.D.\u00a0 Other speakers from outside the College were Claire Kilmer, a graduate student in Purdue\u2019s Davidson School of Chemical Engineering; Rachel Clarke, a sports dietitian and continuing lecturer in Purdue\u2019s Department of Nutrition Science; and Judah Phipps, a physical therapy assistant with Miracles Rehabilitation in Lafayette.<\/p>\n<p>The success of the conference reflected the support of sponsors and the participation of faculty and students.\u00a0 Attendees commented on the value of the One Health perspective of the conference that highlighted the connection between veterinary and human medicine.
