Amalia came to West Lafayette in 1989 from Mexico, where she earned her Medico Veterinario Zootecnista (MVZ) degree, or Mexico veterinary medicine degree, at the Autonomous National University of Mexico.\u00a0 She then began volunteering in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital<\/a>\u2019s ICU and was hired full-time in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Amalia served as the hospital\u2019s first versa-tech, and worked in surgery, medicine, community practice, diagnostic imaging, and oncology, as well as ICU.\u00a0 For the last 25 years, she has worked full-time in oncology. Her hard work was recognized when she received an award for excellence in veterinary teaching in 1997 and the College\u2019s Outstanding Staff Award in 2006.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2741\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2741\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2741 img-responsive img-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_8952_sm-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Amalia pictured with well-wishers at her retirement reception\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_8952_sm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_8952_sm-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_8952_sm-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_8952_sm-353x235.jpg 353w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_8952_sm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amalia de Gortari, MVZ greets well-wishers at a reception held in honor of her retirement in the Continuum Cafe.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the retirement reception, faculty, staff, and students listened as comments were made by Veterinary Teaching Hospital Director Duncan Hockley and <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/pcop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Purdue Comparative Oncology Program<\/a> Director Deborah Knapp, the Dolores L. McCall Professor of Comparative Oncology.\u00a0 Amalia was praised for \u201c\u2026leaving many, many legacies,\u201d and as someone who will be remembered for her bright smile when she greeted passersby in the hallways.<\/p>\n<p>Amalia also recognized for \u201c\u2026being a champion with the international students.\u201d \u00a0Amalia and her family were born in Mexico and became American citizens in 2001. Her background and the understanding she gained from that have been comforting and reassuring to international students.
