{"id":1598,"date":"2018-06-15T08:15:59","date_gmt":"2018-06-15T12:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qa.vet.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=1598"},"modified":"2018-06-15T12:28:42","modified_gmt":"2018-06-15T16:28:42","slug":"pvm-staff-recognized-at-outstanding-staff-and-bravo-awards-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/pvm-staff-recognized-at-outstanding-staff-and-bravo-awards-ceremony.php","title":{"rendered":"PVM Staff Recognized at Outstanding Staff and Bravo Awards Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An annual Purdue Veterinary Medicine tradition of recognizing outstanding staff members continued this week as Dean Reed presented awards and recognition certificates at the Outstanding Staff and Bravo Awards Ceremony and Reception Monday, June 11.\u00a0 The event was held in Lynn 1136 and the Continuum Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding Staff Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dean Willie Reed began the ceremony by presenting two Outstanding Staff Awards.\u00a0 Given since 1988, the Outstanding Staff Award recognizes excellent performance by the College of Veterinary Medicine\u2019s non-faculty, full-time employees.\u00a0 The award was initiated with a gift by an alumnus, the late Dr. Carl Osborne, a member of the DVM Class of 1964, and his wife, Lynn.\u00a0 Dean Reed explained that their involvement in establishing the award reflected their commitment to excellence and their warm support for the College and its outstanding staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent staff members are, in my view, the often unsung heroes in an organization,\u201d Dean Reed said. \u201cTheir can-do attitudes, their knowledge of how to get things done, and their friendly demeanors harness people\u2019s energy and enthusiasm, leading to a positive work environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1604\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1604\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1604 img-responsive img-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Huffman_Amy_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-300x296.jpg\" alt=\"Amy Huffman pictured with Dean Reed\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Huffman_Amy_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Huffman_Amy_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-768x758.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Huffman_Amy_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-1024x1010.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Huffman_Amy_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-238x235.jpg 238w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Huffman_Amy_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Willie Reed presents the Outstanding Staff Award to Amy Huffman, RVT, VTH anesthesiology technologist.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first Outstanding Staff Award was presented to Amy Huffman, RVT, anesthesiology technologist in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), for excellence in each of the following areas: service to the students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies in the College; enhancing the image of the College with its public; public and professional services and relations; and exceptional performance of assigned duties above and beyond that ordinarily expected of the position.<\/p>\n<p>In presenting the award, Dean Reed quoted from the person who nominated Amy, who described her as \u201c\u2026one of the hardest working individuals in our college. Not only is she an integral part of our formal instructional team in anesthesia, but she also pulls her weight on the clinic floor\u2026She is always willing to take on additional tasks, going out of her way to help others despite her own heavy teaching load.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean Reed then read the citation on the award plaque, which said, \u201cYour tremendous work ethic and excellence in anesthesia care are deeply appreciated by the patients and clients of the Purdue Veterinary Teaching Hospital. You are an inspiration to all the students who have benefited from your dedication to their education. Thank you for being an invaluable member of the anesthesia team!\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1606\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1606\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1606 img-responsive img-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Roller_Jessica_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-289x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica Roller accepts her award from Dean Reed\" width=\"289\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Roller_Jessica_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Roller_Jessica_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-768x797.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Roller_Jessica_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-987x1024.jpg 987w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Roller_Jessica_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-227x235.jpg 227w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Roller_Jessica_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small.jpg 1157w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Roller, RVT, diagnostic pathology veterinary technologist, receives the Outstanding Staff Award from Dean Reed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other Outstanding Staff Award was presented to Jessica Roller, RVT, diagnostic pathology veterinary technologist in the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). \u00a0Jessica was honored for excellence in service to the students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies of the College, and exceptional performance of assigned duties above and beyond that ordinarily expected of the position.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s nominator said she cares deeply for the ADDL clients, and \u201c\u2026is easy to approach and is an active listener who is adept at considering multiple perspectives and presenting solutions.\u00a0 If she sees a problem, she quickly comes up with an easy, cost-effective solution to keep the laboratory functioning optimally.\u00a0 Her duties span multiple people, departments, and institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean Reed thanked Jessica for all the great work that she has done for the College and the ADDL.\u00a0 \u201cYou not only have mastered your trade and kept things running smoothly, you also have demonstrated genuine concern and support for your colleagues,\u201d Dean Reed said. \u201cAdditionally, you greatly enhanced the Veterinary Technology rotation in the ADDL to make it more educational as well as inspirational to our students.\u201d\u00a0 He also read from the award plaque, which stated, \u201cYour sincere and outgoing interactions with everyone you encounter are valued. ADDL\u2019s success as a laboratory is promoted by your resourcefulness to solve any problem. We especially thank you for the countless hours you have given of yourself to all those around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>PVM Outstanding Research Staff Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1607\" style=\"width: 296px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1607\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1607 img-responsive img-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/McCain_Robyn_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"Robyn McCain pictured with Dean Reed\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/McCain_Robyn_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/McCain_Robyn_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-768x807.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/McCain_Robyn_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-975x1024.jpg 975w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/McCain_Robyn_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small-224x235.jpg 224w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/McCain_Robyn_Outstanding-Staff_18bravo_002_small.jpg 1142w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Reed presents the PVM Outstanding Research Staff Award to Robyn McCain, who serves as pre-clinical research laboratory manager for the Center for Comparative Translational Research (CCTR).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next Dean Reed presented an award recognizing a member of the College\u2019s research staff.\u00a0 \u201cNon-faculty research staff members play very important roles in the discovery mission of our College, and are indispensable in their respective units and laboratories,\u201d Dean Reed said before presenting the PVM Outstanding Research Staff Award to Robyn McCain.\u00a0 Robyn was recognized for making outstanding contributions as the manager of the Purdue Translational Pharmacology Laboratory, or \u201cPTP,\u201d a joint PVM \/ Bindley Bioscience Center facility; and the Pre-Clinical Research Laboratory, or \u201cPCL,\u201d in the Center for Comparative Translational Research.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Reed then read from several nomination support letters, including one from a graduate student in the College of Engineering, who described how Robyn has helped him in a research setting and has been what he called, \u201c\u2026one of my biggest supporters in my academic career\u2026 She not only is extremely dedicated to developing the pre-clinical research laboratory, but also helps to develop the students and researchers that she collaborates with into high caliber research scientists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A scientist at the Bindley Bioscience Center talked about how, during much of his research, Robyn served as the sole staff member in the PTP laboratory, \u201c\u2026handling everything from assisting with study design, to PACUC protocols, and data collection.\u201d He further explained how, under Robyn\u2019s direction, the facility has grown, nearly doubling in size in the past year alone, and how she has spent \u201c\u2026many long weekends and evenings in the facility, ensuring that studies are completed on time, collecting critical data late at night, and monitoring the health of the animals under her care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PVM faculty member who nominated her commended Robyn for her \u201c\u2026enormous compassion for her animals, which is especially visible when she stays late or returns after hours to ensure the well-being of the animals.\u201d\u00a0 He also described her as an excellent example and mentor for junior staff members and students, adding that she \u201c\u2026is a truly nice person. (Not pictured: Patty Bonney and Julie Roahrig)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Bravo Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the outstanding staff awards, several Bravo awards were presented as well.\u00a0 Dean Reed explained that Bravo Awards recognize substantial accomplishments achieved by employees that extend well beyond regular work responsibilities. \u201cThese awards are for concrete or measurable goal achievement or contribution, for which the employee receives no other honor, award, or compensation,\u201d Dean Reed said.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the following Bravo Award recipients, who were recognized in one or more of four different award categories:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Ariel Werner Bontrager &#8211; <em>exemplary contributions to operational excellence as a virology laboratory technician in the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Tressa Bowman &#8211; <em>exemplary contributions to operational excellence in clerical services in the College\u2019s Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Kathleen Burke &#8211; <em>innovation and fiscal stewardship in her role as teaching technologist in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Julie Lewellen &#8211; <em>moving the University forward and operational excellence in her roles as department head secretary and building deputy in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Jessica Schneider &#8211; <em>operational excellence as a swine production medicine technologist in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dean Reed also recognized two teams of staff members with Bravo Awards:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">PVM Oncology team of Lindsey Fourez, Sarah Lahrman, Chris Royce, and Patty Bonney \u2013 <em>for outstanding work, going above-and-beyond expectations, on the recent research study of Scottish Terriers<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Veterinary Nursing Office team of Paige Allen, Josh Clark, Martie Knill, Pam Phegley, and Julie Roahrig \u2013 <em>for taking on additional responsibilities, beyond the regular duties of their positions, to work as a team during a time when the Veterinary Nursing Office was short staffed<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all of the Outstanding Staff and Bravo award winners!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An annual Purdue Veterinary Medicine tradition of recognizing outstanding staff members continued this week as Dean Reed presented awards and recognition certificates at the Outstanding Staff and Bravo Awards Ceremony and Reception Monday, June 11.
