{"id":1554,"date":"2018-06-08T07:45:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T11:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qa.vet.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=1554"},"modified":"2025-04-07T14:12:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T18:12:09","slug":"purdue-hosts-canine-welfare-science-forum-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/purdue-hosts-canine-welfare-science-forum-tomorrow.php","title":{"rendered":"Purdue Hosts Canine Welfare Science Forum Tomorrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1411 img-responsive img-thumbnail aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Canine-Welfare-Forum_2018_banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Canine-Welfare-Forum_2018_banner.jpg 600w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Canine-Welfare-Forum_2018_banner-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Canine-Welfare-Forum_2018_banner-491x235.jpg 491w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Resources for dog owners and canine professionals will be provided at a continuing education opportunity scheduled tomorrow, Saturday, June 9, at Purdue University.\u00a0 This year\u2019s Canine Welfare Science Forum, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conf.purdue.edu\/plan\/spaces\/default.aspx\">Stewart Center<\/a>, Room 302, will address important aspects of providing a good quality of life for dogs.<\/p>\n<p>The daylong forum is designed for anyone who is in regular contact with dogs, including dog owners, breeders, veterinarians, kennel professionals and academics working with or interested in canine welfare science.\u00a0 \u201cTo ensure that dogs are afforded a good quality of life and that they meet owner and public expectations as safe, lifelong companions, they must be both physically and behaviorally well,\u201d said Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.purdue.edu\/directory\/person.php?id=618\">Candace Croney<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/CAWS\/\">Purdue University <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/caws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Animal Welfare Science<\/a><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/caws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAWS<\/a>), who holds a joint appointment as professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/cpb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comparative pathobiology<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.purdue.edu\/\">College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a> and professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/ansc\/Pages\/default.aspx\">animal sciences<\/a> in the College of Agriculture. \u201cGenetics impacts both of these key aspects of welfare and therefore must be attended to by those selecting and breeding dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to genetics, the forum will address three other areas of canine welfare: nutrition, socialization, and enrichment.\u00a0 A variety of other animal welfare experts will speak at the event.
