He was 78.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Ithaca, N.Y., Dr. Ferguson grew up in LaGrange, Ill. and came to Purdue for his undergraduate studies, earning his B.S. in science in 1964.&nbsp; He then enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in the DVM Class of 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dedicated and respected practitioner, Dr. Ferguson was known for his love of country as a veteran who served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and for his pride and loyalty as a Boilermaker.&nbsp; A faithful supporter of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the John Purdue Club and Purdue Athletics students, he even maintained a second residence in Lafayette in order to facilitate attendance at games and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/18_50th_094_Ferguson_sm-1024x643.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Ferguson smiles as he sits surrounded by classmates at the Beck Agricultural Center\" class=\"wp-image-12496\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/18_50th_094_Ferguson_sm-1024x643.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/18_50th_094_Ferguson_sm-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/18_50th_094_Ferguson_sm-768x482.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/18_50th_094_Ferguson_sm-375x235.jpg 375w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/18_50th_094_Ferguson_sm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Ferguson listens to classmates share stories during their 50th Class Reunion in 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognized for his leadership skills, Dr. Ferguson served terms as president of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association and the Purdue Alumni Association.&nbsp; After owning the Highland Animal Hospital for nearly 20 years, Dr. Ferguson retired from his career as a private practitioner in 1988.&nbsp; He continued, however, with careers in financial planning, as CFO of a construction company, and advising veterinarians in buying or selling their practices, before finally retiring at the age of 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Ferguson\u2019s passion for traveling and seeing the world took him and his wife, Jo Ann, who he married when he was a student at Purdue, to all seven continents and beyond.
