China Exchange Program

Sichuan Agricultural University College of Veterinary Medicine

This faculty-led exchange program was developed through a partnership between Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Sichuan Agricultural University College of Veterinary Medicine. After a visit to Sichuan Agricultural University, located in Chengdu City within the Sichuan Province, Purdue’s Dean of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Willie Reed, believed that a partnership between our two colleges would not only strengthen our international research ties, but also provide our students with an opportunity to gain knowledge on a different perspective of veterinary medicine. In keeping with William J. Fulbright’s original concept of “mutual understanding and exchange”, Purdue Veterinary Medicine will be sending 5-6 students and one faculty member to Sichuan Agricultural University and vice versa. This exchange program will go a long way in exposing our students to the various methods of veterinary medicine and provide them an opportunity to engage with a culture that is different from their own.

Description of the Course

This two-week faculty-led program is focused on the different aspects of Chinese Veterinary Medicine and designed for our veterinary students in their first through third year. Students will partake in clinical rotations throughout the Sichuan Agricultural University Veterinary Hospital, attend lectures by faculty of Sichuan Agricultural University, visit different small and large clinics throughout the Sichuan Province, and even have the opportunity to participate in a short-term internship in Panda medicine within a Pana base in Ya’an.

Where this course fits into the curriculum

Students in their first three years of the Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine degree have the opportunity to participate in a domestic internship, international externship, or international study abroad/volunteer experience throughout the summer. This exchange program will be an added opportunity for our students to engage internationally before entering into their 4th year. Students will be able to use this as an elective credit for their degree as well as use this experience to fulfill their requirements for the International Veterinary Medicine Certificate Program.

Outline and Timeline of Activities

We are expecting this exchange program to operate every summer from Late June- Early July for the next five years (LOI agreement). Students will be housed in several reserved apartments in close proximity to the Sichuan Agricultural University College Veterinary Medicine and Hospital. During their first week, students will partake in clinical rotations throughout the hospital and be paired with veterinary students from Sichuan Agricultural University. In the second week, students will partake in an internship located in the Ya’an province focused on Panda Medicine and Ibis Rehabilitation. On their free days, students will take guided tours throughout the Sichuan Province and visit places like the Jiuzhai Valley, Wuhou Temple, Mt. Qingcheng, Jiuzhaigou National Arts Center, Happy Valley, and Jinli Street. They will also have an opportunity to travel to Chengdu, the capital city, and explore the city and culture.

Faculty Members Responsible for activities

Each year we will select a new faculty member to guide students through this experience. This year we will be sending faculty member Dr. Riyi Shi. He is from China and assisted with solidifying the partnership. He is very familiar with Chinese veterinary medicine practices.
