Please read all information
below on Requirements
First and foremost, a high degree of self-motivation
and self-discipline is required to complete courses via distance
learning.
Unlike on-campus programs where you are required
to be in a particular classroom at a certain time each week, VT-DLP
courses are self-paced. However, you are still required to finish your
courses within the time frame of the semester or the summer session.
Therefore, the single factor that determines success in the VT-DLP is
the ability to set up a schedule for yourself and discipline yourself
to stick with it.
Step 1. Does your Computer meet VTDL Requirements?
VTDL courses are delivered
over the Internet Via a web based software called Blackboard. Since
it is basically a website, Blackboard itself has no minimum hardware
requirements as long as you have an Internet connection of 56k or better
(higher speeds strongly recommended) and can run a Blackboard approved
web browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer on your computer. For
a list of supported browsers, please visit the Blackboard
website.
Some VTDL courses contain
instructional videos which are supplied on CD-rom, so a CD-rom drive
is required as well as a monitor cabable of displaying 800x600 resolution
or better. A resolution of 1024x768 or more is recommended for best
performance.
VTDL courses require that
all pop-up blockers on your system are disabled or allow pop-ups from
the domain *.purdue.edu.
ATTENTION AOL Users:
The AOL browser is not supported by Blackboard. AOL users may access
Blackboard with a different browser with the following steps:
Connect to AOL as normal
Minimize the AOL window
open
a browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer
go to the blackboard
entrance
Step 2. Admission to Purdue University
Admission to Purdue University and to the Associate
in Science Degree Program in Veterinary
Technology is required prior to registering for courses taken for university
credit.
Continuing Education students
do not need to apply for admission to Purdue University.
If you are taking any of your Distance Learning
courses for Purdue University credit and have never previously taken
a Purdue University course for credit, a one-time Application fee of
$30.00 is assessed.
The procedure, Admission Application forms,
criteria for admission, and a contact phone number in the Admissions
office are available in the Student Services section of the VT-DLP home
page under Admissions.

Step 3. Course Registration is
required once you are admitted to Purdue University
Once you have been admitted to Purdue
University and the VT-DLP Associate Degree program, you can registering
for courses by downloading, printing and completing a course registration
form.
If
you are a first time student, please call Brenda at 1-800-276-5958 to
be assigned an advisor.
returning students may download a registration form from the VTDL
Documents page.
Remember:
Admission to the Associate Degree program is required prior to registration
for classes.
Course Fees are required
to be paid with Course Registration
Fees are set by Purdue University. The fee
for a course is dependent upon the number of credit hours. The fee for
each course is listed in the course catalog for the currently enrolling
semester. The course catalog is listed under VTDL COURSES from the main
web page.
Clinical
Mentorship Experience
In order to complete the
Associate Degree program, you will be required to work with veterinary
facilities to document performance of essential skills required of all
veterinary technician graduates of Purdue University and AVMA accredited
programs.
The facilities must possess
and provide access to necessary equipment required to complete these
tasks. If a veterinary facility does not meet the basic requirements
for equipment, it can not participate as a clinical mentorship site.
The basic equipment requirements are listed under VTDL Courses / Clinical
Mentorship.
You will need access to
a videocamera. Mentorship tasks require materials to be submitted for
evaluation by the Purdue VTDLP staff. One of the materials is a video
of you performing and explaining specific tasks. Videos may be submitted
as videotape, compact disc or other forms as approved.

Students
not Residing in the United States
Because examinations are
mailed to examination proctors that you will designate, additional costs
and contingencies may have to be made to insure that your examinations
are returned to Purdue University.
It is essential that students
learn techniques that are considered state of the art of veterinary
medicine. Veterinary facilities in non-US countries will have to meet
the requirements for Clinical Mentorship facilities. See information
above about the Clinical Mentorship Experience.
