Information
from
the Financial Aid Office
Students and
their families are responsible for paying the cost of post-secondary
education to their fullest ability. Thus, students must show need for
financial aid.
Purdue is
required to use a federal mandated uniform method to determine students’
need for assistance.
Need is determined
by calculating:
COST
OF EDUCATION
Fees, tuition,
room and board, books, supplies, transportation, personal and miscellaneous
expenses
MINUS
STUDENT'S
RESOURCES
Parent contribution, student's assets and available earnings, outside
awards, student's benefits, other resources
EQUALS
NEED
for financial assistance
Financial
aid, then, is designed to bridge any gap that exists between the cost
of education and the resources the family can afford to provide.
All students
must apply for financial aid by using the “Free Application for Federal
Aid” (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available in both paper format and electronically
at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
(click
here to go to FAFSA site -

Although this
form can be filed all year the priority filing deadline is March
1st of the year in which you plan on enrolling.
Federal, State
and Purdue aid programs have some requirements you should be aware of.
There are 2 basic types of aid available for VTDL students: grants &
loans. These individual
aid programs, however, have other limiting eligibility criteria that
may affect your awards.
To receive aid you must:
- be admitted into a degree
program,
- make Reasonable Academic
Progress
- and be enrolled in a specific
number of hours per enrollment period.
Temporary students are not
eligible for any type of assistance.
Aid Programs in the VTDL
with which you could be eligible:
- 1 to 5 credit hours –
Prorated Pell Grant and Alternative Loans only.
- 6+ credit hours – Prorated
Pell Grant, scholarship, other Purdue controlled aid, and Federal
Stafford/ Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) only.
Students with a prior degree
can be considered for:
- 1 to 5 credit hours –
Alternative loan only.
- 6+ credit hours – Federal
Stafford Loan/PLUS only.

I know I can have financial aid for other schools, why does it not apply
to the VTDLP?
Most students are
not eligible for FEDERAL financial aid packages because they are not
taking a ½ time credit load (6+ hours) and because there are
requirements for federal aid that the VT-DLP does not qualify for. Those
students who do get grants typically get special grants (Pell grants,
Child of Disabled Veteran, etc.) that are not the typical federal aid
packages.
Financial aid and
distance learning do not always mesh. It is getting better and the financial
aid office works VERY hard to help students find the funding. Often
students believe they are eligible for financial aid and they are not.
It is frustrating for the student and for us. Our purpose is to educate
and we want everyone to have access but we also have to be able to fund
the necessary staff to service our customers, the students, in a timely,
efficient manner.
Questions related to GI
Bill educational support should contact Amy Kingma at the Purdue
University Office of the Registrar at (765) 494-7638, ajkingma@purdue.edu.
Questions about veteran's
affairs and GI Bill of Rights benefits can also be directed to: regvet@purdue.edu
Students eligible for financial
support under the Child of Disabled Veterans Act should
contact Marvin Smith in the office of Financial Aid at (765) 494-5059
You can find more information
on Veteran affairs at purdue here: http://www.purdue.edu/Registrar/CustServ/veterans.htm
Students may be able to obtain
school loans through private sources that have less stringent regulations
on number of credit hours the student must take to be eligible, etc.
The VT-DLP courses are sectioned
into small credit hour segments to allow the student to take as many
or as few courses as they feel they can reasonably afford to take and
complete.
