COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the first of 4 courses
involving large animal and equine nursing and health management for
the veterinary technician. This course provides an introduction to nursing
and health management that a technician will be expected to provide
in a veterinary practice. Emphasis will be on the role of the veterinary
technician in the veterinary facility.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
· The student will
be able to describe selected common diseases of cattle, sheep, goats
and swine in terms of common names, etiologic agents, means of transmission,
zoonotic potential, basic therapeutic or diagnostic approaches, vaccinations,
and the veterinary technician's role in each of these.
· The student will
be able to describe management and nursing techniques for cattle, sheep,
goats, and swine.
METHOD OF DELIVERY
Primarily web-based exercises,
textbook, and examinations (on-line or paper). The exercises will be
completed on line and submitted to the instructor. Supplemental material
will be offered on line as content (in addition to the textbook). Quizzes
and exams will be sent to a proctor. The proctor must be a veterinarian,
an accredited veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, or CVT), or an educator/teacher
at a school, college, or university. The proctor will return the completed
exam to the instructor for grading.

label drug use and regulatory issues as they apply to large animal health.
· The student will
be able to describe selected complementary medicine techniques currently
being used in large animal health management.
· The student will
be able to describe management and nursing techniques for poultry, horses,
and selected exotics.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the third of 4 courses
involving large animal and equine nursing and health management for
the veterinary technician. This course focuses more on the observation/assessment
of the animal, handling techniques, and basic medical care and management
that a technician will be expected to provide in a veterinary practice.
Emphasis will be on the role of the veterinary technician in the veterinary
facility.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
· The student will
be able to identify normal and abnormal behavior as it relates to health
of the animal.
· The student will
be able to describe the appropriate knots commonly used in restraint
or management of large animals.
· The student will
be able to explain the appropriate procedure for taking a history and
doing a physical examination on various large animal domestic species.
· The student will
identify the common instruments use in large animal management.
· The student will
be able to describe proper placement and maintenance of IV catheters,
and the appropriate means and rates of fluid administration

the veterinary technician. This is the introduction to nursing and health
management that a technician will be expected to provide in a veterinary
practice. It includes techniques, equipment, and client education. Emphasis
will be on the role of the veterinary technician in the veterinary hospital.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
-to introduce the
student to the basics of nutrition, care of the hospitalized patient and
specimen collection
- to present the fundamental
techniques used in bandaging, neonatal care and routine procedures
- to introduce milking, medical
emergencies and parturition
- to serve as a pre-requisite
course for the Large Animal and Equine Nursing clinical mentorships
METHOD OF DELIVERY
Primarily web-based exercises,
textbook, and examinations (on-line or paper).
The exercises will be completed on line and submitted to the instructor.
