Computer repair appointment policies:
All help desk appointments must go through Connie's desk. If you need an appointment with the help desk please make sure you have gone through the steps listed at this site first then CALL Connie's desk at 41153 to set up the appointment. Appointments will not be set up by email alone. |
If you are having computer problems please follow these procedures before contacting the computer help desk:
Be Patient: Most problems occur when someone is impatient and starts clicking buttons multiple times or trying to do 50 things at once. This can cause the memory to fill up and become overfilled, forcing it to 'dump'. These are generally the cause of a 'lock up' or the 'blue screen of death'. Rebooting will generally fix this problem.
Reboot Computer: Rebooting is typically the first thing I will do and believe it or not it fixes a majority of problems. The reasoning for this is that nothing is perfect, including your computer hardware and/or software. Glitches can come in all shapes and forms and can cause various symptoms. Sometimes a 'restart' from the start menu will not work. This means you will have to power the computer down. If a re-boot does not fix the problem, or the problem persists, contact the computer help desk.
Printer Problems: Something to try if your problem is printer related is power cycle the printer. It is usually best to just un-plug the printer and let it sit for 5 seconds then plug it back in. Also, a simple computer reboot could remedy a problem that the printer is having. As always, make sure the printer is on and there is paper and ink or toner in the printer (has been the cause of many printer 'problems')
Installing Software on a Computer:
Some Microsoft products are covered under the Microsoft Campus Agreement, including operating systems for work stations, Office Suite, and others. For information on these products go HERE. Some software does not require a license at all. For programs such as any Adobe or Macromedia product, the VIS technician will need to see proper media and or license in order to install it.
Software that is not recommended or is not permissible on your SVM computer:
VIS recommends against installing some software packages at all. Some of these include, webshots desktop, bonzai buddy, gator, or weather bug. Peer to peer software such as Kazaa, E-Donkey, Morphius and Bear Share are not permissible to be installed. Some of this software has been known to cause major security holes, and or conflict with other more important software causing multiple problems with computer systems. We can see no reason why any of these peer-to-peer programs should be installed on any SVM owned computer. VIS reserves the right to, and will un-install ANY peer to peer software found on a computer that connects to the Purdue Network. Not only does this software cause HUGE security holes for your computer and the entire SVM Network, the software/content generally acquired by them is usually pirated and therefore illegal.
Specialized hardware and software:
There are some labs that have specialized hardware and software. Examples of these are special scanners or cameras used in research labs, and the software that runs them. VIS trys to do their best to keep up with these. Most often these are highly specialized pieces of hardware with software written specifically for them. Finding support for these items can sometimes prove to be difficult. VIS may not be able to provide sufficient support for a device and it may be necessary to contact a support person from the company that supports the hardware and/or software.

Requirements to be connected to the network:
- In order to be connected to the campus network the computer MUST:
- Have at least a 10Mbit Ethernet Card
- Be running the latest security updates for the particular operating system
- Have current anti-virus software installed
New Computer Set Up or Re-load:
In order for a help desk technician to support a computer, that computer must be set up by a help desk technician. This is to make sure that all network settings are set up properly, as well as anti-virus software being installed. For any NT based e.g., Windows 2000 and XP operating system, the Administrator password is set by a help desk technician, if the technician can't log into the computer they will not fix it.
As a rule all computers that are set up by the help desk come with the same basic set up. This configuration consists of:
- Operating System
- Microsoft Office Suite XP
- Up-to-date security patches and software updates
- Internet Explorer
- Netscape
- Eudora E-mail Client
- Adobe Acrobat Reader (PDF reader)
- McAfee Virus Scan with EPO
- Media Software (Quicktime, Media Player, Real Player etc.)
All other software will need to be requested at time of scheduling. Operating System choices are Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional and, Windows XP Professional. The Microsoft Office Suite install will include Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, Power Point, and media content such as the clip art. Outlook is not installed by default as it is NOT supported by the Help Desk. Microsoft Publisher is also no longer installed as a default. Publisher is, however, supported so it needs to be requested in addition to the office components.
Before requesting a new computer set up please be sure you have important documents and data files backed up. If you want to be sure, a help desk technician can assist you in doing this.

SPECIAL NOTE!
NOTE ON PERSONALIZATION OF YOUR SYSTEM
It is important for you to realize that any modifications you have made to personalize your computer will most likely be lost during the process of updating. You will need to reinstate these yourself or give the help desk personnel explicit, written instructions as to what you have done to personalize your machine. If these are extensive, it may be beyond the purview of the VIS to make the changes for you.
