VOLUME 40, Number 20............................................................................. 23 May 2008

This edition of the SVM Newsletter begins a transition period and provides a great opportunity to commend Carlene Linn for years of very dedicated, tireless and sacrificial work producing the newsletter each week.  In the process of moving the responsibility for this publication to the SVM Advancement Office, I became aware of just how much effort Carlene put into editing each issue.  Please join me in applauding her work by sending a message of thanks and appreciation before you finish reading this issue (linnc@purdue.edu).

This transition period coincides with an ongoing project to develop a new communication and branding program for the School.  During the next few weeks we will be making some changes to the newsletter to enable faster electronic access and ensure the relevance of the content for our faculty, staff and students.  Two changes are being implemented now:  we are converting to a bi-weekly format and discontinuing the distribution of printed copies.  These changes simply reflect current reality -- urgent announcements are now conveyed by e-mail, and desktop printers yield hardcopy at the click of a mouse.

To help us in planning additional changes, we have been conducting a School survey.  If you haven’t responded yet, you may still do so at  http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB227QNSZ9GJR.  You must respond by June 6.   Hopefully, through this process, we will build on Carlene Linn’s outstanding legacy of service to the school.

Hail Carlene!  Hail Purdue!

Director, Alumni Relations & Public Affairs

Summer Counseling Services

Perhaps you have been thinking about coming to counseling or someone has suggested counseling to you.  A recent study of veterinary students indicated that two-thirds of respondents said they felt overwhelmed by a heavy workload and more than 70% reported being worried about passing their classes.  Also, one third of the vet students said they were stressed by a competitive atmosphere in their programs (Collins & Foote, 2005).

  • Are you one of the many students who experience stress related to academic pressures, adjusting to a rigorous schedule, or personal relationships?
  • Do you worry extensively about how others may perceive or judge you?  Do you find yourself feeling anxious or depressed?
  • Are you consistently neglecting your own needs in order to do well in school, at the expense of your health and peace of mind?

Counseling can help you cope more effectively with these and other challenges.  Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) understands the hectic schedules of SVM students and that it is difficult to find time for self-care.  In order to meet your needs for counseling, CAPS will continue to offer evening appointments within the School of Veterinary Medicine during the summer.
