White Coats and Awards Celebrate Student and Faculty Accomplishments

Purdue Veterinary Medicine students and their families and friends filled the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms April 14 for the College of Veterinary Medicine’s annual Honors and Awards Banquet.  The program began with the “White Coat Ceremony,” a tradition first established in 1993 at Columbia University’s Medical School with the intent of impressing upon students, physicians and the public, the important symbolic role of the white coat in patient-doctor interactions.

“Today, this ceremony continues in medical schools and has become a tradition in veterinary schools throughout the country,” explained Dean Willie Reed.  “The White Coat Ceremony marks the passage of third-year veterinary students from the classroom to the clinics.”  As the names of the members of the DVM Class of 2015 were announced, the students stepped onto the stage, received their coats from Dean Reed and posed for a keepsake photo in front of a special backdrop with the College’s name and logo.

Following the White Coat ceremony, awards were presented to veterinary and veterinary technology students as well as faculty members.  Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Kathy Salisbury acknowledged each award sponsor and shared background about each of the student recipients as the award winners came up to the stage.

Awards supported by nearly 40 sponsors were given.  Awards for veterinary students recognized their achievements in several categories, including Excellence in Clinical Performance, Excellence in Patient Care and Client Communication, and Excellence in Academic Performance.  Recognition of Veterinary Technology students included awards for leadership, academic achievement and technical proficiency.  To view a complete list of award recipients, click here.
