About the College of Veterinary Medicine

Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine, located on the West Lafayette, Indiana campus, is one of only 28 North American colleges of veterinary medicine and the only veterinary college in Indiana. Since the graduation of its first class of DVMs in 1963, The college has produced nearly 2,000 veterinarians who now practice in all 50 states and fill important roles in government, industry, and academia.

Educational opportunities are not limited to students seeking the professional DVM degree, however. The College also offers associate and bachelor's degrees in veterinary technology and graduate and post graduate programs in the three academic departments, Basic Medical Sciences, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, and Veterinary Pathobiology.

Purdue is a major research university, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is an important part of that research effort, conductive active programs in studying spinal injuries, infectious diseases, neuroscience, oncology, herd management, production medicine, animal welfare, equine sports medicine, and flow cytometry.

The College of Veterinary Medicine also provides service to animal owners and to the greater community through programs such as:

• The Veterinary Teaching Hospital which not only is a resource for students, but serves as a consultation and referral center for practicing veterinarians and provides routine health care services for small and large animals in Tippecanoe County.
• The Purdue Equine Sports Medicine Center which offers comprehensive evaluations designed to diagnose and treat the causes of poor performance in athletic horses. A computer-driven high-speed treadmill is the centerpiece of the center. The treadmill allows clinicians to recreate, in a laboratory setting, the conditions that horses encounter in competition.
• The PetSafe program that provides short-term emergency housing for pets owned by individuals or families in crisis. Animals are housed at Purdue. Veterinary student volunteers, under the supervision of hospital veterinarians, take care of the animals
• The Peace of Mind Program which provides pet owners a means by which they can address the needs of their companion animals in a will provision.
