Namesake Honored at Fall Conference Road Race
One of the longest-running traditions of the Purdue Veterinary Medicine Fall Conference continued in 2011 at the break of day in the scenic West Lafayette Celery Bog. The annual Skip Jackson Road Race, sponsored by McAfee Animal Hospital, attracted more than 40 faculty, staff, students and alumni for the 5K run / walk. The event, which is named in honor of Dr. Horace (Skip) Jackson, professor emeritus of veterinary physiology and biochemistry, was first held in 1972. This year, West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis was on-hand to welcome the participants, and Dr. Jackson joined Dean Reed for the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the event. The top three women runners were Dr. Andrea Johnson, Amanda Schoolcraft and Jewel Pothen. The fastest men were Cory Sengsanith, Thad Blossom and Dr. Tim Lescun. Dr. Eli Asem took honors as the fastest walker. And in separate categories for "Master's Runners," Dr. Catharine Scott-Moncrieff took first place for the women, and Dr. John Reutman was first for the men. In 2012, the Road Race will be combined with the annual Dog Jog, and will be called the "Skip Jackson Dog Jog," to be held at the conclusion of the Fall Conference week.
